In Year 9, personal choice and responsibility for learning are greatly encouraged. This is in keeping with research that shows adolescents learn better when they feel they are involved in their own learning. Please Note: Year 9 Core Subjects and Streams run for 2 semesters. Arts and Technology Electives run for one semester each.

Considerations when choosing Year 9 subjects
Students should also consider whether any particular unit:
- interests them
- will extend their knowledge
- is deemed a wise choice by parents and teachers
Before making any choices for a particular semester, it is vital that students view the individual subject information.
Our timetable is constructed based on students’ choices each year. The ability to accommodate a change of mind may be possible but will be limited by timetable and class size constraints.
Catering for Individual Learning Needs
Our Learning Enhancement class is offered to students with additional needs in literacy. This class is undertaken instead of Language. This occurs by invitation only and is likely to be a continuation of participation in Year 8 Learning Enhancement. This class runs for both Semester 1 and 2.
Furthermore, students on an academically adjusted program receive support from our team of Learning Support Officers. This occurs in some English, Maths, Science and Humanities classes across Year 9. With parental consent, classwork and assessment tasks can be adjusted by the teacher, to cater to individual learning needs.
Provision is made for individual differences in Mathematics. In Year 9 most students undertake Core studies in Mathematics in semester 1. In semester 2, students from this group who have demonstrated extra ability may be invited into Extension Mathematics classes which cover content at a faster pace and in greater depth.
A group of highly capable students are invited to participate in the Accelerated Mathematics programme. This program covers all the Year 9 Mathematics (Core) as well as the Year 10 Mathematics A course in one year.
Assessment
Continuous monitoring of students’ learning is a vital aspect of education. Students undertake a variety of coursework that develops their skills and knowledge. Online continuous reporting ensures that students and parents have access to assessment task grades and feedback in real time.
The semester report produced at the end of each semester provides a summative indication of each student’s achievement according to the Victorian Curriculum standards.
In Year 9 formal examinations are held for English, Maths and Science in June and November.
